The Harrowing of Ash, an action roguelike from Silent Forest Games. Everything on this page may be used in coverage of the game.
The Harrowing of Ash is an action roguelike. You play a necromancer brought back after a few thousand years, in a world where souls no longer go anywhere when something dies. Fights put thousands of enemies on screen at once, and anything you kill can be raised to fight for you. Elites keep their traits when they come back.
Your minions fight on their own and you direct them: switch stances mid-fight, or order the whole pack to pounce or loose a volley of arrows. You also raise a Champion, a persistent hero minion you build up across runs.
Each run starts with a choice of doctrine. Deathlord fields fewer, much stronger minions. Horde Master fields a large army that dies and is replaced quickly. Choirmaster makes the kinds of minion the army lacks cheap, and repeats more expensive.
Between fights you travel branching campaign maps. Shrines sell knowledge about why the world is rotting, and they charge the same souls you need for power. You can finish the game without ever learning why.
Silent Forest Games is a small independent studio. Its first game, Prop Haunt, a 4v1 multiplayer psychological horror game, is out on Steam.
